Perspective Studies

February 29, 2012 Leave a comment

I’ve been steadily plodding along with the anatomy studies alongside my work on the Doctor Who portraits. Here’s a page of hands I did recently that turned out pretty well.

And some more of the perspective studies from the same book as last time:

4th Doctor – detail pass 1. Also, Perspective practice.

Another update on the Doctor, just working on refining things.

So, in addition to  my work on Tom Baker’s Doctor, I’ve also been following along with some perspective exercises from a book titled “Perspective Drawing”. Unfortunately, the author’s name isn’t listed on the cover.

I’ve also started work on a charity/commission piece for a local community theatre group I’m a part of. They’ve requested a victorian-style portrait of a man in his 50s to use as a set piece for their production of Arsenic and Old Lace.  I’m excited to get started on that, but I’ve got to wait to see what size frame I’ll be working to fit, first.

4th Doctor Sketches

November 20, 2011 1 comment

So here’s the analysis of another screenshot of the Fourth Doctor with notes. As you can tell by the dat I did this a while ago, but real life has interfered and I haven’t had a chance to upload in a while. I haven’t tweaked this after comparing it with the screenshot but it’s still fairly close, all things considered. I think my observation skills are improving.

I think I’m going to do this portrait in the style of a Renaissance or Baroque portrait… something like “Portrait of a man with sonic screwdriver” with a sort of semi-sarcastic look to his face.

4th Doctor – prelim sketches

So, I’ve finally made it to the famous Fourth Doctor. This time I’ve decided to do something more original than just copy the screenshot, so to that end I’ve started off by grabbing some screenshots in different angles and analyzing them as I draw to get a feel for the form.

The idea is that I will then be able to come up with my own expression. We’ll see how well that turns out.

Sketch number one, with my notes of how far off I was when I compared it to the original:

Jack Hamm Study

No Doctor Who this time. This one’s a study from Jack Hamm’s “Drawing Scenery”.

I did this one at the cottage over Thanksgiving weekend and decided to use the opportunity to practice my watercolour-pencils.

Just a quick break from working on the Third Doctor to do some anatomy studies of the head.
