5th Doctor – Ambition levels: rising

So after some watching and re-watching,  I’ve decided on a screenshot. This has always been my favourite 5th Doctor scene: Coming across a tray of celery on a table at a party, the Doctor looks over his own celery, then the celery on the tray… takes two stalks from the tray, comapres them, picks one, and replaces his own celery with it.

It’s tricker than I’ve tried before – more of his body showing, hands present, face not very clear. I’ve got more screenshots of just his face in almost similar poses if I need them. I’m cautiously optimistic – this drawing went by a lot faster than my first attempt at the 4th Doctor.  Here’s my sketch:

4th Doctor – Pose attempt #2

After consulting with the great people over at Conceptart.org, I’ve settled on this final drawing. The next steps will be to draw the costume on top and get started with the shading.

4th Doctor – Yet more sketches and pose brainstorming

Here’s one final sketch of the Fourth Doctor before I started working on the final portrait. I think I’m finally starting to get the hang of Tom Baker’s facial features by this point, so I started brainstorming poses.

I’ve decided on going for something similar to this:

3rd Doctor — ready for colour!

September 28, 2011 2 comments

After another few days’ worth of work, I’m finally ready to start adding colour!

Added more curls to the top of his head, finished up the  jacket and then got rid of the ends of the bow tie to make room for the ruffles. Then I took another look at my references and trimmed the hair back a bit and texturised the background. I can’t believe how long this took! For the next Doctor, I’m  definitely going to colour right away.

3rd Doctor — Good Hair Day

FINALLY got the 3rd Doctor’s hair under control. Still not 100% pleased (I like the right side better than the left) but it’s good enough for now, so I’ll wait to go back to it after  I’ve added colour.

I also added the pupils to his eyes and refined the facial wrinkles, and  I’m astounded at how much of a difference it makes. I’m really starting to capture a good likeness, so my ego is soaring right now. I’m sure it’ll crash back down when I try and add colour, but let’s just enjoy it for now.

Next step: Finish refining the outfit so I can move on. I’m thinking of doing some kind of camo theme to the background.

Third Doctor — final sketch

Here’s the final sketch for my portrait of the Third Doctor.

I adjusted a few things here and there comparing my version side-by-side with the original, and filled out the hair using a few other screenshots as references. I also tweaked around a bit with the clothing. I’ll probably shrink the tie later but good enough for now. Onwards, to Painter! I’m gonna try the ‘do it in black-and-white, then add colour’ technique with this. It’ll be my first try at it, so wish me luck!

Third Doctor – initial sketch

So, I finally saw the last of the 3rd Doctor’s episodes, and I’ll be sad to see him go. I’ve enjoyed each Doctor so far, but they just seem to keep getting better and better.

Since this will be my first portrait in colour, I’m going to focus one more time on getting the likeness before adding a bit more originality/creativity/personality starting with the famous Doctor number four. This portrait was drawn entirely freehand. I overlayed some guidelines on my reference while I was sketching but I haven’t gone and overlayed it to check for accuracy. Just looking at it side-by-side with my reference I see I’ll need to fix the chin, the eyes, and the hair a bit.
